Macau.- The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) has reported that the year’s total of border crossings reached 100m on June 7, which is 18 days earlier than in 2024. This sets a new record for the shortest time taken to surpass the number.

The increase was mainly due to new cross-border rules introduced this year. These included the “one entry per week” plan, “multiple-entry visa” options, and rules that allow Macau-registered vehicles to drive in Guangdong province.

The daily average number of entries and exits at the city’s checkpoints stood at 600,000. That’s an increase of 10.8 per cent in year-on-year terms. The main entry point, the Border Gate, had seen over 50m crossings by May 30. The Hengqin Border and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau (HKZM) bridge each recorded 10m by May 7 and May 9, respectively.

Macau received 12,955,456 visitors in the first four months of the year. That’s an increase of 12.9 per cent when compared to last year. Same-day visitors (7,578,976) grew by 23.4 per cent while overnight visitors (5,376,480) rose by 0.8 per cent. The cumulative average length of stay of visitors shortened by 0.1 day year-on-year to 1.1 days in the first four months. The duration of stay for same-day visitors (0.2 day) remained unchanged, while that for overnight visitors (2.3 days) increased by 0.1 day.

The average hotel occupancy rate rose by 5.1 percentage points year-on-year to 89.6 per cent in the first four months of the year. The number of guests decreased by 3.2 per cent to 4,779,000. Some 757,000 inbound package tour visitors were recorded, an increase of 10.2 per cent year-on-year. Tour visitors from mainland China rose by 8.9 per cent year-on-year to 662,000. International tour visitors increased by 9.3 per cent to 76,000, with those coming from the Republic of Korea (38,000) growing by 24.6 per cent.
