{"id":777027429,"date":"2025-06-06T02:14:24","date_gmt":"2025-06-06T05:14:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=777027429"},"modified":"2026-04-21T22:11:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T01:11:08","slug":"skycity-to-file-legal-proceedings-against-fletcher-building","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/skycity-to-file-legal-proceedings-against-fletcher-building","title":{"rendered":"SkyCity to file legal proceedings over convention centre delays"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>SkyCity is seeking NZ$330m in damages due to construction delays at the New Zealand International Convention Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>New Zealand.- SkyCity Entertainment Group has announced it will initiate legal proceedings against Fletcher Building Limited and The Fletcher Construction Company Limited due to ongoing delays in the completion of the New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The centre will open in February 2026, seven years after its original scheduled completion date of January 2019 due to various complications, including a fire at the construction site in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The casino operator alleges that Fletcher committed breaches of contract, reflectting &#8220;gross negligence, and\/or a persistent, flagrant or wilful neglect to carry out obligations under the building works contract.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company said: &#8220;SkyCity claims that it is entitled under the contract to liquidated damages of over NZ$330m (US$200m) from Fletchers. This is a project of key importance not only for SkyCity but also Auckland and the wider New Zealand economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We remain confident in <a href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/skycity-confirms-2026-opening-for-new-zealand-international-convention-centre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">our opening date of February 2026<\/a> and expect the building to be handed over to us in the second half of this year.
