The Senate committee suggested a referendum on the bill due to concerns about its constitutionality. The Prime Minister was invited to present the government’s rationale but had a prior commitment. The draft bill was criticised for potentially legalising large-scale casinos and giving excessive power to a policy board. Transparency issues were raised regarding state revenue limits and concession grants without a bidding process. Proposed locations for integrated resorts were also discussed, highlighting concerns about land value and concessions. The bill has been delayed until the next parliamentary session, with Shinawatra defending it as beneficial for the economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Northern Territory government in Australia is set to double the annual tax cap for licensed corporate bookmakers and betting exchanges, increasing it from 1m to 2m revenue units starting July 1. This change will result in an additional AU$13.1m in tax income annually, with an overall gambling tax take of AU$145m for 2025-26. Responsible Wagering Australia (RWA) criticized the move as “economically reckless” and lacking industry consultation, potentially harming the Territory’s reputation as a licensing jurisdiction.
