Macau.- CAM<\/strong>, the operator of\u00a0Macau’s international airport, has reported that 1.83 million passengers <\/strong>used the airport in the first quarter of the year. That’s a rise of 2.2 per cent in year-on-year terms. The airport handled 14,000 aircraft movements, up 1.6 per cent when compared to last year. However, cargo volume was below forecast, falling 9.5 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mainland China<\/strong> routes accounted for 46 per cent of passengers, and Taiwan <\/strong>routes 18 per cent. Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia accounted for 36 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CAM said: “The geopolitical situation and global economic instability have posed challenges for route development. Furthermore, rising operational costs for airlines have further constrained its capacity, leading to noticeable changes in market structure and having a significant impact on the passenger and cargo operations. It is expected that the passenger and cargo volume in 2025 will not align with the forecast target at the beginning of the year.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February, CAM predicted that passenger numbers could reach 8.5 million this year, 11.3 per cent higher than the 7.64 million recorded in 2024<\/a>. In the first two months of the year, the international passenger volume reached 200,000, an increase of 13 per cent year-on-year. Easter break<\/a> traffic reached 92,000 passengers, a 3.5 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ahead of the summer season, CAM announced that AirAsia will commence flights between Tawau and Macau in early May. Jeju Air is expected to launch a route to Jeju, South Korea, in May.<\/p>\n\n\n

Macau visitor numbers rise in Q1<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the first quarter of the year, 9,862,665 people visited Macau. That\u2019s an increase of 11.1 per cent in year-on-year terms. Same-day visitors (5,823,384) rose by 21.5 per cent year-on-year, and overnight visitors (4,039,281) dropped by 1.1 per cent. The average length of stay decreased by 0.1 day year-on-year to 1.1 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mainland Chinese tourists <\/strong>accounted for 7,206,035 arrivals, a rise of 14.5 per cent year-on-year. Those travelling under the Individual Visit Scheme (4,011,208) rose by 15.6 per cent. Some 381,172 visited Macau under the \u201cone trip per week measure\u201d while 97,957 travelled under the \u201cmultiple-entry measure\u201d. Mainland visitors travelling under the \u201ctourist group multi-entry measure\u201d totalled 28,671.<\/p>\n\n\n
