{"id":777020215,"date":"2024-10-28T10:07:21","date_gmt":"2024-10-28T13:07:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=777020215"},"modified":"2026-04-22T04:46:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T07:46:08","slug":"illegal-gambling-in-the-philippines-35-deported","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/illegal-gambling-in-the-philippines-35-deported","title":{"rendered":"Illegal gambling in the Philippines: 35 deported"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Those deported were arrested in a raid on an alleged illegal offshore gaming operator in Lapu-Lapu City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>The Philippines.- The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has reported that <strong>35 Indonesians <\/strong>arrested&nbsp;during a raid on an illegal offshore gaming operator at a resort in Lapu-Lapu City last Wednesday (October 23) were blacklisted and deported to Indonesia over the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Immigration commissioner <strong>Joel Anthony Viado <\/strong>said those deported were among<strong> over 100 foreign nationals arrested <\/strong>in the raid, which was coordinated by the BI along with the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC), the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), the Philippine Center on Transnational Crime and the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to The Manila Times, Viado said: &#8220;The arrest and subsequent deportation of these foreigners send a strong message that illegal online gambling operations will not be tolerated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We remain committed to upholding the President&#8217;s directive to ban such activities, and we will continue to work closely with other government agencies to ensure that those involved in illegal operations are brought to justice.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Foreign workers employed by\u00a0offshore gaming operators had until October 15 to voluntarily downgrade their visas from work visas to temporary visitor visas. Last week, justice secretary<strong>\u00a0Jesus Crispin Remulla\u00a0<\/strong>reported that over 5,000 foreign workers\u00a0have not filed for a downgrade of their visas, which means the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/over-10000-foreign-offshore-gaming-workers-in-the-philippines-downgrade-visas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">visas will now be changed to tourist visas<\/a>\u00a0automatically, allowing holders to stay in the Philippines for a maximum of 59 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BI previously warned that if workers did not leave the country before December 31, it would commence deportation proceedings. The BI had reported that by October 15,&nbsp;<strong>12,000 foreign offshore gaming workers<\/strong>&nbsp;voluntarily applied for the downgrade of their visas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) secretary\u00a0<strong>Jonvic Remulla<\/strong> has said he will ensure the closure of all offshore gaming operators by year-end as ordered by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/philippine-president-orders-ban-on-offshore-gaming-operators\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">President Ferdinand Marcos Jr<\/a>. He said there would be\u00a0a final inspection of offshore gaming operators on December 15\u00a0and that they must be completely closed by December 31.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remulla also warned about reports suggesting that <a href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/philippines-warns-offshore-gaming-operators-may-move-to-timor-leste\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Timor Leste could be a destination for gambling operators<\/a> leaving the Philippines due to the incoming ban.
