Villanueva said the social costs outweigh any potential benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: &#8220;While we badly need revenues, the choice should not be between the devil and the deep blue sea. We want our revenues coming from legitimate, legal, and sustainable sources.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>House deputy speaker\u00a0<strong>Jay-jay Suarez<\/strong>\u00a0had proposed that the government consider <a href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/philippine-deputy-proposes-regulation-of-e-sabong\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">regulating online cockfighting<\/a> to make up for the revenue lost from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/philippine-president-orders-ban-on-offshore-gaming-operators\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">banning offshore gaming operators<\/a>. He said online cockfighting was a \u201cbillion-dollar industry\u201d and that this could be an opportunity for the government to study which agency can properly regulate it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Former president\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/duterte-apologises-for-taking-his-time-to-suspend-e-sabong\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rodrigo Duterte<\/a>\u00a0banned\u00a0<strong>online cockfighting\u00a0<\/strong>in May 2022 after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/philippines-calls-for-e-sabong-to-be-suspended-after-31-disappear\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">31 people disappeared<\/a> in an incident connected to the industry.
