Northern Mariana Islands.-\u00a0<\/strong>A District Court has granted\u00a0Imperial Pacific International (IPI)\u00a0<\/strong>extra time to respond to the NMI\u00a0government’s\u00a0request to dismiss\u00a0its lawsuits against Commonwealth Casino Commission (CCC) officials and governor Arnold I. Palacios. The court turned down\u00a0IPI’s\u00a0request for more time to submit a motion for leave to file a second amended complaint. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The casino operator now has until May 17 to file its response. The judge found no evidence of bad faith on\u00a0IPI’s\u00a0part and stated that no one would be negatively affected if the extension\u00a0was granted. The judge noted that\u00a0there’s\u00a0no deadline to file a motion for leave to file a second amended complaint, so\u00a0IPI’s\u00a0request was denied\u00a0on this basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n IPI launched the legal action<\/a>\u00a0in January claiming unconstitutional impairment of contract, violation of the contract clause of the US and CNMI constitutions, violation of the takings clause of the US Constitution, violation of the due process clauses of the US and CNMI Constitutions and breach of the casino licence agreement (CLA). It claimed the CCC did not provide due process when it deliberated on revoking\u00a0IPI’s\u00a0exclusive casino licence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Last month, IPI filed a petition for Chapter 11 bankruptcy<\/a>, stating that the company owes creditors more than US$165.8m.
