South Korea.- Police in South Korea have arrested\u00a02,925 people for alleged involvement in illegal online activities in a six-month operation. According to a report by the National Office of Investigation (NOI), among those arrested were 1,035 teenagers. Among them, 75 adults\u00a0were formally detained, while\u00a0566 teenagers have\u00a0been sent\u00a0to counselling centres.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Of the teenagers, 12\u00a0were accused\u00a0of running online gambling sites\u00a0themselves\u00a0while six were involved in advertising gambling sites. Police seized\u00a0KRW61.9bn (US$45m). According to the investigation,\u00a0many middle and high school students were introduced\u00a0to online gambling sites through friends.\u00a0Teenagers were also attracted\u00a0to gambling through smartphone messages and ads on the internet and social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By type of gambling, 41.9 per cent of the teenagers played baccarat, 19.8 per cent sports betting, 17.1 per cent online casinos and 14.7 per cent the Powerball lottery or online slot machines.
