{"id":777013756,"date":"2024-03-07T08:53:31","date_gmt":"2024-03-07T11:53:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=777013756"},"modified":"2026-04-22T12:16:26","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T15:16:26","slug":"unions-nsw-calls-for-reduction-in-number-of-gaming-machines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/unions-nsw-calls-for-reduction-in-number-of-gaming-machines","title":{"rendered":"Unions NSW calls for reduction in number of gaming machines"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Unions NSW has proposed to reduce the number of poker machines in the state to a minimum of 25,000 over the next five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Australia.-<strong>\u00a0Unions NSW\u00a0<\/strong>has today (March 7) published a call for<strong>\u00a0a gradual reduction in the number of poker machines<\/strong>\u00a0in the state.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has also proposed that the state prohibit all online gambling inducements, introduce a ban on all gambling advertising on all media and implement all 31 recommendations from the state report on online gambling and its impacts on those experiencing gambling harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unions NSW&#8217;s proposal is to reduce the number of poker machines in NSW through the following measures:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a moratorium on new poker machine licences in pubs and clubs;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>where establishments with poker machines close or seek to relocate those licences be cancelled and the poker machines be removed from circulation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>phased five-year reduction of poker machines in NSW, to bring us, at a minimum, in line with Queensland (approximately 25,000 fewer poker machines); and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>redirect the AU$1bn tax subsidy for poker machines installed in registered clubs be used to compensate for the removal of licences. Compensation should be minimal given the historical profits made from those machines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>New South Wales currently has the most machines in Australia and 30 per cent more poker machines than Queensland and Victoria combined with\u00a0<strong>87,298 gaming machines\u00a0<\/strong>across clubs, hotels and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/the-star-entertainment-group-launches-cashless-gaming-trial-in-sydney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Star Casino in Sydney<\/a>.
