{"id":777007922,"date":"2023-08-04T10:27:38","date_gmt":"2023-08-04T13:27:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=777007922"},"modified":"2026-04-22T19:20:56","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T22:20:56","slug":"acma-asks-curacao-to-take-action-against-online-casinos-targeting-australian-players","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/acma-asks-curacao-to-take-action-against-online-casinos-targeting-australian-players","title":{"rendered":"ACMA asks Cura\u00e7ao to take action against online casinos targeting Australian players"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Australian Communications and Media Authority has complained about 90 websites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Australia.- The <strong>Australian Communication &amp; Media Authority (ACMA)<\/strong> has appealed to the Cura\u00e7ao government for assistance in tackling offshore gambling operators targeting the Australian market.&nbsp;The regulator has written to and <strong>met with government officials from Cura\u00e7ao<\/strong> with complaints about<strong> 90 online casinos<\/strong> licensed in the Dutch Caribbean territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The regulator said some operators <strong>deliberately use iconic animals or Australian slang<\/strong> in their business names or promotional materials to attract local customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In late May, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/acma-seeks-help-from-curacao-to-stop-illegal-gambling-in-australia\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/acma-seeks-help-from-curacao-to-stop-illegal-gambling-in-australia\" target=\"_blank\">ACMA wrote to Cura\u00e7ao\u2019s Finance Minister, Javier Silvania<\/a>. The letter addressed Cura\u00e7ao \u201cmaster\u201d licence holders found to breach Australian laws by providing or advertising prohibited interactive gambling services to Australian customers. It outlined a list of sites that have engaged in the promotion or provision of igaming products in Australia, many of whom have evaded fines.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ACMA acknowledged the challenges it faced in enforcing penalties due to the global nature of online gambling and expressed a desire to establish regulatory collaboration with overseas gambling regulators, including the Cura\u00e7ao Gaming Authority (CGA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A meeting between ACMA and some Cura\u00e7ao officials took place at the beginning of June to address the complaints made in the May letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under new rules in Cura\u00e7ao, the existing holders of sub-licences will be required to apply for a regular operating permit in order to be allowed to continue to provide their services. The meeting notes state that the representatives of Cura\u00e7ao\u2019s gambling authority confirmed that they would take into account the alleged contraventions in jurisdictions including Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The officials of the Cura\u00e7ao Government told the ACMA representatives that the list of the contravening digital gambling companies will be forwarded to the relevant master licence holder.
