{"id":777001635,"date":"2023-01-20T10:46:14","date_gmt":"2023-01-20T13:46:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=777001635"},"modified":"2026-04-23T01:21:23","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T04:21:23","slug":"macau-visitor-arrivals-down-26-in-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-visitor-arrivals-down-26-in-2022","title":{"rendered":"Macau visitor arrivals down 26% in 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Macau&#8217;s visitor arrivals in 2022 were the lowest since 1999.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Macau.- <strong>The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC)<\/strong> has reported that Macau registered 5.70m visitor arrivals in 2022, down 26 per cent\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-visitor-arrivals-up-30-7-in-2021\" target=\"_blank\">year-on-year<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city was heavily affected by a number of travel restrictions as countermeasures due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Mainland China was the only country to have a&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/covid-19-vaccine-passports-could-speed-up-macau-tourism-recovery\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">largely quarantine-free travel bubble<\/a>&nbsp;with Macau&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-lifts-all-quarantine-requirements-for-arrivals-from-mainland-china\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">until December<\/a>&nbsp;when those arriving from Covid-19 risk areas in mainland China were no longer required to undergo quarantine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022,&nbsp;<strong>Macau received about 5.11 million tourists from mainland China<\/strong>, which represents nearly 90 per cent of total visitor arrivals. The majority of them came from Guangdong province (5.1m).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of Individual Visit (IVS) tourists (mainly from Guangdong Province) reached 1.68m. It represented a year-on-year decrease of 31.3 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of tourists in 2022 hit a record low in Macau. The total was even lower than the 5.9m registered in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, Macao received approximately 3.22m same-day visitors and 2.48m overnight visitors, a year-on-year decrease of 19.8 per cent and 32.8 per cent respectively. In 2022, the average length of stay for tourists for the whole year was 1.5 days and 3.4 days for overnight guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In December alone, the city received 389,390 tourists, an increase of 6.2 per cent month-on-month. However, the December statistic was down 52.6 per cent from a year earlier and coincided with a surge in Covid-19 infections in Macau and mainland China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Macau expects 50k daily tourists during Chinese New Year<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO)<\/strong>&nbsp;is expecting 40,000 to 50,000 daily arrivals during the upcoming Chinese New Year holiday, which begins on&nbsp;<strong>Sunday, January 22 and ends on Sunday, February 5<\/strong>. In 2019, pre-pandemic, they registered about 170,000 visitors per day during that break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this week, Macao Government Tourism Office director&nbsp;<strong>Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes&nbsp;<\/strong>said&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/mgto-says-many-macau-hotels-are-fully-booked-for-the-chinese-new-year\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most hotels in Macau<\/a>&nbsp;are \u201cfully booked\u201d for the holiday period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While talking to local media, however, Fernandes didn\u2019t disclose specific numbers in terms of hotel room percentages but remarked the MGTO understood from communication with several resort operators, that the number of hotel rooms they can supply to the market had returned to pre-Covid-19 levels.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Macau&#8217;s visitor arrivals in 2022 were the lowest since 1999.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":176,"featured_media":26653,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"is_press_release":false,"is_interview":false,"is_opinion":false,"focusai_summary":"Macau's 2022 visitor arrivals plummeted 26% year-on-year to 5.70 million, marking the lowest since 1999, primarily due to stringent COVID-19 travel restrictions, with mainland China accounting for nearly 90% of visitors.
