In the first few months of the year, the recovery could be gradual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Macau.- Analysts Aras Poon and Sandy Lim from S&P Global Ratings<\/strong> have updated their forecast for Macau\u2019s mass gross gaming revenue 2023. In a recent report, they said the figure will return to 60 to 70 per cent<\/strong> of the 2019 level this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reason for the rise in their GGR 2023 forecast is the more rapid easing of Covid-19 control measures<\/a>. S&P had been expecting an easing only \u201cin the second quarter\u201d this year, and that such relaxation \u201cwould be gradual\u201d. But the actual \u201crapid shift away\u201d from the country\u2019s \u2018zero-Covid\u2019 policy \u201cshould support Macau\u2019s gross gaming revenue recovery in 2023,\u201d the agency stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe expect the recovery could be gradual in the first few months, as high caseloads in China could make people reluctant to venture out at least initially,\u201d the report stated. \u201cHowever, we believe the recovery in mass GGR could accelerate more significantly in the second half of the year<\/strong> (to above 80 per cent of 2019 levels) based on the recovery we have observed in other gaming markets like Las Vegas and Singapore.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cbiggest downside risk\u201d, according to the analysts, is the \u201cfear among the public\u201d when large numbers of people contract Covid-19, which may lead to more voluntary social distancing and more suspension of activity and spending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
