{"id":7702,"date":"2020-06-30T23:22:12","date_gmt":"2020-06-30T23:22:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=7702"},"modified":"2026-04-24T04:01:05","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T07:01:05","slug":"malaysian-gaming-may-not-recover-until-at-least-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/malaysian-gaming-may-not-recover-until-at-least-2021","title":{"rendered":"Malaysian gaming may not recover until at least 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Travel bans and social distancing measures will injure the finances of local operators well into next year, analysts predict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Malaysia.- Financial services company Maybank Kim Eng has predicted Malaysian gaming will not fully recover until at least 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although some <strong><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/genting-malaysia-reopens-two-casinos\" target=\"_blank\">casinos have been able to reopen<\/a><\/em><\/strong> in Malaysia, Maybank Kim Eng analyst Samuel Yin told Singapore&#8217;s The Business Times that even if the virus is contained soon, revenue will continue to suffer due to travel bans social distancing measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yin said he didn&#8217;t expect to see a V-shaped recovery in gaming either in Malaysia or South Korea. He predicted that Malaysia&#8217;s biggest operator in the country, Genting Malaysia, will not see earnings recover to pre-pandemic levels in the next year, and that VIPs will probably focus on their own businesses instead of playing in local casinos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite Genting casinos outside of Malaysia expected to reopen soon, Maybank predicts the group will see net losses of MYR573.7 million (US$133.9 million) in 2020, and net profit of MYR466.4 million (US$108 million) in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The analysis paints a bleaker picture than a recent <strong><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/asian-gaming-companies-ebitda-to-drop-70\" target=\"_blank\">report from Moody\u2019s<\/a><\/em><\/strong> which predicted that markets with strong local consumer bases like Malaysia&#8217;s and Singapore&#8217;s could hope to recover faster than those that depend more on tourism.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Travel bans and social distancing measures will injure the finances of local operators well into next year, analysts predict.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":7704,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"is_press_release":false,"is_interview":false,"is_opinion":false,"focusai_summary":"Maybank Kim Eng analysts predict Malaysia's gaming sector will not fully recover until 2021, citing ongoing travel bans and social distancing measures.
