{"id":7505,"date":"2020-06-23T20:45:42","date_gmt":"2020-06-23T20:45:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=7505"},"modified":"2026-04-24T04:14:06","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T07:14:06","slug":"china-lottery-sales-remain-low-due-to-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/china-lottery-sales-remain-low-due-to-covid-19","title":{"rendered":"China lottery sales remain low due to Covid-19"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Results for May were down 17.7 per cent on 2019 as the impact of the pandemic continues to show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>China.- Lottery sales in China continue to feel the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Authorities say China\u2019s sports and welfare lotteries took in CNY29.22 billion (US$4.14bn) in revenue in May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s an improvement on April\u2019s CNY23.39 billion (US$3.3 billion) total, but still a decline of 17.7 per cent on figures for May 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As could be expected, the majority of May\u2019s revenue came from digital sales, which brought in CNY23.22 billion (US$3.28 billion) or 79.5 per cent of total revenue for the month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sales for quiz games dropped by 71.6 per cent to CNY2.72 billion (US$385 million), and instant win sales by 9.2 per cent, to CNY2.36 billion (USD334 million).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Video lottery sales also declined by 78.8 per cent to CNY916.1 million (US$129 million)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Total lottery sales in China for the first five months of 2020 fell by 49.2 per cent year-on- year to CNY90.33 billion (USD12.7 billion). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>April saw lottery sales of CNY23.39 billion (about US$3.28 billion), and March CNY 10.51 billion (about US$1.48 billion), Xinhua agency reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The numbers from May suggest something of a <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/china-lottery-sales-march\">recovery from the previous month<\/a><\/em><\/strong> as China slowly comes out of Covid-19 lockdown measures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China\u2019s welfare and sports lottery are the only legal forms of gambling in the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Results for May were down 17.7 per cent on 2019 as the impact of the pandemic continues to show.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":7507,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"is_press_release":false,"is_interview":false,"is_opinion":false,"focusai_summary":"China's lottery sales in May 2020 reached CNY29.22 billion (US$4.14bn), marking a 17.7% decline compared to May 2019, yet an improvement over April 2020 figures.
