{"id":7362,"date":"2020-06-17T20:38:11","date_gmt":"2020-06-17T20:38:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=7362"},"modified":"2026-04-24T04:22:15","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T07:22:15","slug":"macau-tourism-up-slightly-in-may","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-tourism-up-slightly-in-may","title":{"rendered":"Macau: tourism up slightly in May"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Tourism director suggests 20,000 visited the city in May, and current visits reach 1,000 per day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Macau.- \u00a0Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, director of the <strong><em>Macao Government Tourism Office <\/em><\/strong>(MGTO) has hinted in a radio interview that 20,000 visitors had come to the city in May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It would mean an improvement from April\u2019s 11,041 arrivals at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fernandes said that in the first five months of 2020 there were 3.25 million visitors in the city, compared with 17.19 million arrivals in the same period last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For January to April inclusive, the tally had been just over 3.23 million, according to the statistics bureau, suggesting a balance of around 20,000 visited in May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senna Fernandes said it was the worst year-on-year performance since records were kept and since the liberalisation of casinos in 2002. The January to April figure was already down 76.6 per cent on 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The average daily visitor tally fell as low as 200 , but had recently risen to an average of around 1,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Macau has not reported any Covid-19 case since early April, and all positive cases have been released from hospital. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fernandes said the city was unlikely to see a major revival of tourism in the near term, but there may be recovery in regional tourism such as <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/zhuhai-quarantine-macau\">between Macau and Zhuhai<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tourism director suggests 20,000 visited the city in May, and current visits reach 1,000 per day.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":7364,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"is_press_release":false,"is_interview":false,"is_opinion":false,"focusai_summary":"Macau's tourism sector experienced a severe downturn in early 2020, with visitor arrivals in May estimated at 20,000, a marginal improvement from April but a drastic 76.6% year-on-year decline for January to April.
