{"id":5970,"date":"2020-04-27T10:15:29","date_gmt":"2020-04-27T10:15:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=5970"},"modified":"2026-04-24T05:45:25","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T08:45:25","slug":"macau-unemployment-gaming-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-unemployment-gaming-industry","title":{"rendered":"Macau: unemployment hits highest levels since 2012"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Unemployment rate hit 2.1 per cent between January and March amid the on-going Coronavirus pandemic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Macau.- The unemployment rate in Macau reached 2.1 per cent between January and March, the highest number since April-June 2012 the Statistics and Census Bureau has revealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The unemployment rate for local residents rose by 0.3 percentage points to 2.9 per cent, with the number of employed residents dropping by 3,200 to a total of 280,200 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Total employment numbers rose by 6,500 from the previous period to 397,400, due to the increase in non-resident workers living outside of Macau but who moved back to the city before entry restrictions were imposed on February 20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of unemployed residents increased by 1,000 people from the previous period to 8,500, with an a notable increase in those working in the Transport and Storage sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employment in Wholesale and Retail Trade rose by 5,700 to 49,300 workers, while decreasing by 5,200&nbsp;in Restaurants and Similar Activities to 50,700.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The average monthly employment earnings in the first quarter dropped by MOP1,000 (\u20ac115) quarter-to-quarter to MOP16,000 (\u20ac1,851), while average earnings for Gaming and Junket Activities and the Construction sector stood at MOP20,000 (\u20ac2,314) and MOP14,000 (\u20ac1,619) respectively.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unemployment rate hit 2.1 per cent between January and March amid the on-going Coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":2675,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"is_press_release":false,"is_interview":false,"is_opinion":false,"focusai_summary":"Macau's unemployment rate surged to 2.1% between January and March, the highest since 2012, with the local resident unemployment rate reaching 2.9% amidst the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.
