{"id":5951,"date":"2020-04-24T11:39:54","date_gmt":"2020-04-24T11:39:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=5951"},"modified":"2026-04-24T05:47:02","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T08:47:02","slug":"overseas-sports-betting-new-zealand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/overseas-sports-betting-new-zealand","title":{"rendered":"No overseas sports betting hurting NZ market"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sports blackout is impacting commission paid to sports organisations through global betting activity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>New Zealand.- Betting on overseas sports could help sports organisations in New Zealand as they struggle under financial pressure during the Coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But lockdown measures across the globe have seen the shutdown of the majority of sporting events and as a result, the sports betting market in New Zealand and beyond has seen a sharp decline in revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This has caused huge consequences for Kiwi sporting bodies, which could be on the brink of collapse because they rely heavily on commission payments made to them by&nbsp;the Totalisator Agency Board (TAB).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each country code gets a cut of wagered money on the sport through the TAB, whatever the competition is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sport in New Zealand like basketball has a very big handout, thanks to the NBA&#8217;s high volume of fixtures&nbsp;and major global profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the year to July 31, 2018, Basketball New Zealand received $2million from the TAB, representing around 30 per cent of BBNZ&#8217;s total income. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This figure represented approximately 80 per cent of NBA betting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BBNZ\u00a0Chief Executive, Iain Potter, told\u00a0TVNZ: &#8220;It&#8217;s impacting us at every level, right down to our associations and communities having to consider the activities that they&#8217;re running and how they manage their way through this period that we are all facing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If the NBA does not resume its season, we will be approximately $650,000 short of what revenue we thought we would get.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/new-zealand-sports-betting\"><strong><em>Horse racing is continuing in New Zealand<\/em><\/strong><\/a>behind closed doors, but it is unknown what impact that has had on the industry.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sports blackout is impacting commission paid to sports organisations through global betting activity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"is_press_release":false,"is_interview":false,"is_opinion":false,"focusai_summary":"The global sports blackout, exacerbated by the Coronavirus pandemic, has severely impacted commission payments to New Zealand sports organizations from the Totalisator Agency Board (TAB).
