{"id":344,"date":"2019-10-21T21:26:58","date_gmt":"2019-10-21T21:26:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=344"},"modified":"2026-04-24T10:19:39","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T13:19:39","slug":"imf-macaus-gdp-to-fall-1-3-percent-in-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/imf-macaus-gdp-to-fall-1-3-percent-in-2019","title":{"rendered":"IMF: Macau\u2019s GDP to fall 1.3 percent in 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The International Monetary Fund (IMF) expects Macau\u2019s GDP to fall by 1.3% this year and by 1.1% in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>This forecast was included in IMF\u2019s latest <em><strong>World Economic Outlook report,<\/strong><\/em> published last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back in May, the IMF&nbsp;had forecast&nbsp;that the annual rate of growth in Macau\u2019s GDP would be 4.3% this year. The fund\u2019s prediction at the time was in light of discussions in April between both IMF and Macau officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The IMF predicted in May that growth in the VIP gaming market in Macau would be subdued in the medium term. <a href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/gross-mass-macau\"><em><strong>Macau VIP gross gaming revenue&nbsp;fell by 22.5%<\/strong><\/em><\/a><em><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em>year-on-year in the third quarter this year. While, VIP gaming revenue as a proportion of all casino GGR in the third quarter stood at 43.9%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The aggregate of Macau casino GGR for the nine months to September 30 stood at \u20ac24,4 billion, a difference of 1.7%&nbsp;year-on-year, comparing with what the government had confirmed on October 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Macau\u2019s GDP increased by 4.7%\nyear-on-year in real terms last year, according to the city\u2019s Statistics and\nCensus Service. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, and according to the\nIMF, Macau\u2019s economic growth begun moderating in the second half of 2018, as\ninvestment weakened and custom from free-spending visitors declined as a result\nof the deleveraging effort in mainland China and the trade row between the U.S.\nand the mainland.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The International Monetary Fund (IMF) expects Macau\u2019s GDP to fall by 1.3% this year and by 1.1% in 2020.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":133,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"is_press_release":false,"is_interview":false,"is_opinion":false,"focusai_summary":"The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has significantly downgraded Macau's GDP forecast, now predicting a contraction of 1.3% in 2019 and 1.1% in 2020, a stark reversal from earlier growth projections.
