Macau.- Six months after his arrest,\u00a0Alvin Chau Cheok Wa<\/a>, former CEO of Suncity Group Holdings, has been indicted for allegedly founding and leading a criminal group and money laundering.\u00a0He was arrested in November together with 11 others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to TDM Radio, Chau Cheok Wa could face\u00a0a prison sentence of between eight and 15 years<\/strong>\u00a0for the crimes of which he is accused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Chau Cheok Wa resigned as CEO of Suncity Group Holdings<\/a> a day after his arrest. At the time, the company said in a statement: \u201cIn the event that the group loses the support of Mr Chau for whatever reason,\u00a0the financial position, business and operation of the group will be adversely affected<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Macau police conducted various investigations and collected information dating back to 2019. They claim they found that Chau had established gambling platforms in other countries and invited mainland Chinese residents to participate in illegal online gambling activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Chau’s arrest was followed by the arrest of Levo Chan Weng Linth, the former CEO of Macau Legend<\/strong> and chairman of Tak Chun Group<\/strong> who was also arrested<\/a> on money laundering charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n After these two high-impact arrests, the majority of the casino operators in Macau decided to cease all transactions with junket operators<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Authorities in Macau are currently working on a bill that proposes\u00a0changes to the legal framework<\/a>\u00a0concerning junket operations.\u00a0In the first reading<\/a>,\u00a030 MPs voted in favour\u00a0<\/strong>while one voted against the bill.
