Bernstein Ltd<\/strong> reported in a memo today (Monday) that the latest checks indicate that &#8220;frequent gamblers to Macau have seen <strong>visa issuance denied by China<\/strong> immigration offices.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The note comes amid China&#8217;s ongoing clampdown on cross-border gambling. Last week, <strong>China\u2019s National Immigration Administration<\/strong> said that since 2021 it had \u201cspotted and stopped\u201d from leaving the country, over 90,000 people that were allegedly \u201cengaged in gambling activities\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bernstein said in the note: \u201cAs China Immigration Administration just reiterated strict Covid-19 border policy and restrictions on non-essential travel, we expect near-term visitation (to Macau) and (casino) revenue may remain constrained.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At present, Macau\u2019s borders are closed to all non-residents from outside the Greater China region.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bernstine added that Macau\u2019s month-to-date GGR (May 1 to 15) is MOP2.1bn (US$252m), with a month-to-date average daily rate of MOP140m (US$16.8m), <strong>down 83 per cent compared to May 2019 <\/strong>and down 58 per cent versus the May 2021 average daily rate. Bernstein predicts May GGR will be 85 per cent below its 2019 levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Macau GGR up 108% between May 1 and 9<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sanford C. Bernstein Ltd<\/strong>&nbsp;reported last week that gross gaming revenue in Macau was <a href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-ggr-up-108-between-may-1-and-9\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-ggr-up-108-between-may-1-and-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">up 108 per cent week-on-week<\/a> for the week ended May 9. The figure was also up 124 per cent&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-ggr-at-lowest-level-since-september-2020\" target=\"_blank\">when compared to April<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the brokerage, the city recorded daily casino gross gaming revenue of MOP200m (US$24.7m). The growth was mainly due to China\u2019s Labour Day break which saw\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-labour-day-break-arrivals-down-18-2\" target=\"_blank\">136,647 people visit Macau<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the figure represents a drop of 18.2 per cent compared to 2021, when\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-occupancy-hits-83-2-during-labour-day-break\" target=\"_blank\">165,500 tourists visited Macau<\/a>\u00a0during the break, and it\u2019s a long way from pre-pandemic numbers.
