According to local media reports, Duterte now says e-sabong, is \u201cworking against our values\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In March,\u00a0<strong>23 senators<\/strong>\u00a0signed\u00a0<strong>Resolution No. 996\u00a0<\/strong>calling for a suspension of e-sabong after\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/philippines-calls-for-e-sabong-to-be-suspended-after-31-disappear\" target=\"_blank\">31 people linked to the industry disappeared<\/a>.\u00a0Until now, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/philippines-president-e-sabong-will-continue\" target=\"_blank\">Duterte has defended e-sabong<\/a>\u00a0arguing that it was necessary for the economy because of a lack of funds as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He had stated: \u201cAt the end of the year, if I have the billions at PHP640m a month, then I can use it to help because the pandemic has depleted my contingency plan and the intelligence fund which I gave to the police and military.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PAGCOR&nbsp;<strong>chairman Andrea Domingo&nbsp;<\/strong>had previously said the regulator could raise about Php7.2bn to Php8bn if e-sabong continues to operate until the end of 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/philippines-could-get-us26m-from-e-sabong-tax\" target=\"_blank\">A bill to tax online betting on sabong events<\/a>\u00a0held in legal cockpits was approved in November 2020, and in May 2021,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/philippines-pagcor-to-receive-revenue-from-licensed-e-sabong\" target=\"_blank\">PAGCOR issued the first licences<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Rodrigo Duterte has changed his mind and ordered the rapid suspension of e-sabong operations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":176,"featured_media":19050,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"is_press_release":false,"is_interview":false,"is_opinion":false,"focusai_summary":"President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered the immediate suspension of e-sabong operations in the Philippines, reversing his previous stance.
