Suomi said that despite acknowledging the negative effects of gambling on children, there has been little research to quantify the magnitude of the problem in Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly 60,000 children face the highest levels of parental gambling problems, which can lead to significant harm. At the other end of the scale,\u00a0<strong>nearly half a million children<\/strong>\u00a0were exposed to lower-risk parental gambling, the study found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suomi stated: &#8220;Problem gambling is a significant public health concern on its own, but the experience of gambling-related harm reaches much wider. Parental gambling is also associated with child welfare concerns &#8211; things like neglect, poor nutrition and family violence.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added: &#8220;It&#8217;s clear we need to specifically consider and address child wellbeing in these families.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In February,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/acma-report-shows-an-8-increase-in-australian-online-gambling\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new research<\/a>&nbsp;from the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/acma-fines-au2-5m-sportsbet-for-breaching-australias-spam-laws\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA)<\/a>&nbsp;found that&nbsp;<strong>more than one in 10<\/strong>&nbsp;(11 per cent) Australians reported participating in online gambling at some stage in the previous six months. That\u2019s an&nbsp;<strong>8 per cent increase<\/strong>&nbsp;from 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ACMA aimed to study the impact of Covid-19 on online gambling habits and found that 16 per cent of Australians who gamble online reported an increase in their gambling frequency compared to before the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">NSW launches multicultural gambling harms service<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>GambleAware and The Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) have launched<strong>&nbsp;a new gambling harm support programme&nbsp;<\/strong>to help people dealing with gambling addiction issues.
