{"id":28695,"date":"2022-04-05T07:17:19","date_gmt":"2022-04-05T10:17:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=28695"},"modified":"2026-04-23T09:54:37","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T12:54:37","slug":"nagaworld-workers-demand-government-end-violence-against-strikers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/nagaworld-workers-demand-government-end-violence-against-strikers","title":{"rendered":"NagaWorld workers demand government end violence against strikers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Unions claim NagaWorld has refused to consider the reinstatement of laid-off workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Cambodia.- Striking NagaWorld Casino workers have called on the government to<strong>\u00a0end the violence against them<\/strong>\u00a0outside the Phnom Penh complex, where female protesters have repeatedly complained of sexual harassment and abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The petitions were submitted to the interior and women&#8217;s ministries during a break in protests, which were suspended to allow for negotiations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hun Vannak<\/strong>, a human rights activist, told Democracy Voice that home secretary Sar Kheng, who had called for calm and patience, must ensure that officials in his jurisdiction stop the violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NagaWorld employees went on strike on December 18 2021 in protest against&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/nagacorp-confirms-cut-jobs-due-to-economic-crisis\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NagaCorp\u2019s layoffs and pay cuts<\/a>&nbsp;that aimed to<strong>&nbsp;improve cost efficiency<\/strong>&nbsp;due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/cambodian-government-to-intercede-in-nagacorp-conflict-with-unions\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Government-mediated negotiations<\/a>&nbsp;with the casino operator failed to bear fruit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/more-nagaworld-workers-arrested-during-strike-action\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">140 people were arrested<\/a>&nbsp;for breaching Covid-19 health protocols. They were reportedly taken to an isolation centre on the outskirts of Phnom Penh for quarantine before being released a few hours later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eight union leaders were imprisoned for 74 days and charged with inciting social unrest.\u00a0<strong>Ry Sovandy<\/strong>, one of those arrested, said: \u201cOur stance is that the union has to be reinstated and the workers who want to work should be allowed to return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur position is purely based on the willingness of the workers. We will not accept any condition that leads to a dissolution of the union or only allows one party, the NagaWorld company, to win in this dispute.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">NagaCorp posts GGR of US$109.9m for Q1<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>NagaCorp\u00a0company posted gross gaming revenue of US$109.9m for Q1, a decline of 13.7 per cent when compared to Q1 in 2021. However new gaming revenue was up at US$1.08m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NagaCorp reported earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) of US$60.5m, up&nbsp;<strong>83.3 per cent quarter-on-quarter<\/strong>&nbsp;and 57.4 per cent year-on-year.
