{"id":26138,"date":"2022-01-11T08:36:04","date_gmt":"2022-01-11T11:36:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=26138"},"modified":"2026-04-23T12:23:53","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T15:23:53","slug":"genting-hks-shipyard-in-germany-files-for-insolvency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/genting-hks-shipyard-in-germany-files-for-insolvency","title":{"rendered":"Genting HK&#8217;s shipyard in Germany files for insolvency"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Genting Hong Kong has revealed its shipbuilding unit in Germany, MVWH, has filed for insolvency after failing to reach an agreement over financial assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Hong Kong.- The cruise line operator Genting Hong Kong has reported MV Werften Holdings Ltd (MVWH), the company&#8217;s shipyard located in Germany, has filed for bankruptcy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Genting Hong Kong stated<strong>&nbsp;the company couldn&#8217;t reach an agreement with German authorities&nbsp;<\/strong>to get financial assistance to finish the building of a massive cruise liner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, the casino cruise ship operator was actively looking for&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/genting-hong-kong-continues-to-seek-new-sources-of-funding\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new funding sources<\/a>&nbsp;due to the&nbsp;<strong>uncertainty surrounding the appearance of new outbreaks of Covid-19<\/strong>&nbsp;in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last June,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/genting-hong-kong-announces-recapitalization\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Genting HK<\/a>&nbsp;announced it had made a series of deals to gain access to new loan facilities and an extension on existing arrangements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agreement granted it&nbsp;<strong>access to new loan facilities of US$700m<\/strong>, an amendment and extension of existing financial indebtedness and a provision of backstop funding arrangements to address future liquidity needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last December, <a href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/genting-hong-kong-to-receive-30m-bridging-loan\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/genting-hong-kong-to-receive-30m-bridging-loan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Genting HK<\/a> also said that a company related to its chairman Tan Sri Kok Lim had agreed to provide a bridge loan of $30m as part of a restructuring plan reached with creditors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group&#8217;s financial woes have also sparked the&nbsp;<strong>bankruptcy filing of Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven AG<\/strong>, another shipyard Genting HK owns in Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Associated Press, Germany blamed Genting HK for the collapse of the shipyard business.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>German authorities said they were open to discussing a \u20ac600m (US$678m) rescue plan, but wanted Genting HK to contribute at least 10 per cent to the rescue effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In its latest filing,<strong>&nbsp;Genting Hong Kong confirmed that the German authorities have sought to replace the existing financing structure with a new financing package<\/strong>, seeking to &#8220;impose additional conditions on disbursement of funds&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additional conditions included that participating banks with existing loans must be &#8220;subordinated to their existing securities&#8221; to support the German Economic Stabilisation Fund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was also disclosed Genting Hong Kong&#8217;s controlling shareholder had to provide an additional \u20ac60m in new funding to support MVWH and its subsidiaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Genting Hong Kong said in its filing that&nbsp;<strong>it couldn&#8217;t compel participating banks in existing facilities<\/strong>&nbsp;or their shareholders to provide the additional financial assistance now requested by German authorities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Genting Hong Kong has revealed its shipbuilding unit in Germany, MVWH, has filed for insolvency after failing to reach an agreement over financial assistance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":176,"featured_media":25560,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"is_press_release":false,"is_interview":false,"is_opinion":false,"focusai_summary":"Genting Hong Kong's German shipbuilding unit, MV Werften Holdings Ltd (MVWH), has filed for insolvency after failing to secure a \u20ac600m rescue package from German authorities.
