{"id":26105,"date":"2022-01-10T07:40:28","date_gmt":"2022-01-10T10:40:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=26105"},"modified":"2026-04-23T12:26:00","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T15:26:00","slug":"macau-expects-40000-daily-visitors-for-chinese-new-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-expects-40000-daily-visitors-for-chinese-new-year","title":{"rendered":"Macau expects 40,000 daily visitors for Chinese New Year"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) expects to surpass the figure registered last year that was significantly down due to the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Macau.- The Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) is confident the Chinese New Year Golden Week will be better than the year before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Macao Government Tourism Office director\u00a0<strong>Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes\u00a0<\/strong>told Chinese Radio Ou Mun Tin Toi that authorities expect 40,000 visitors daily and revealed the government is planning several large-scale events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year the Chinese New Year period will be between February 1 and February 3.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last November,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-expects-up-to-10-million-visitors-in-2022\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the MGTO<\/a>&nbsp;said the city could receive up to 10 million visitors in 2022 if Macau finally resumes the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-continues-negotiating-with-mainland-china-on-e-visas\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">e-visa programme with China<\/a>&nbsp;and reopens borders with Hong Kong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lei Wai Nong, Secretary for Economy and Finance<\/strong>, has predicted that<strong>\u00a0GGR for 2022 will be MOP130bn (US$16.2bn)<\/strong>, half that seen before the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said it would be crucial to ease travel restrictions with Hong Kong and mainland China if these numbers are to be achieved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hong Kong-China travel bubble delayed due to Omicron cases<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chief Executive of Hong Kong,&nbsp;<strong>Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor<\/strong>, said that an outbreak of Omicron variant Covid-19 cases in Hong Kong may hinder the city\u2019s chances of reaching a quarantine-free travel arrangement with mainland China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Authorities in China had previously announced the country was going to&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/hong-kong-china-travel-bubble-to-be-launched-from-december-19\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">open its borders for travellers from Hong Kong<\/a>&nbsp;from December 19 while&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/hong-kong-macau-travel-bubble-to-start-within-a-week\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Elsie Ao Ieong U<\/a>, Macau\u2019s secretary for social affairs and culture, had said the travel bubble was going to apply only for those who had been fully vaccinated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>reopening of the border between Hong Kong and Macau was highly expected&nbsp;<\/strong>as Hong Kong has historically accounted for 15 per cent to 20 per cent of Macau\u2019s total gaming revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mainland China continues to be the only country to have a&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/covid-19-vaccine-passports-could-speed-up-macau-tourism-recovery\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">largely quarantine-free travel bubble<\/a>&nbsp;with Macau.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) expects to surpass the figure registered last year that was significantly down due to the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":176,"featured_media":23015,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"is_press_release":false,"is_interview":false,"is_opinion":false,"focusai_summary":"Macau's 2022 tourism and gaming revenue recovery, including a projected MOP130bn GGR, is critically dependent on the resumption of e-visa programs and border reopenings with mainland China and Hong Kong.
