{"id":25725,"date":"2021-12-20T13:34:38","date_gmt":"2021-12-20T16:34:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=25725"},"modified":"2026-04-23T12:46:06","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T15:46:06","slug":"uncertainty-surrounds-macaus-economic-recovery-in-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/uncertainty-surrounds-macaus-economic-recovery-in-2022","title":{"rendered":"Uncertainty surrounds Macau&#8217;s economic recovery in 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Lei Wai Nong has said the number of tourists in Macaus is increasing but uncertainties remain around the potential for an economic recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Macau.-\u00a0Lei Wai Nong, Macau&#8217;s secretary of economy and finance, has said that the number of tourists and length of stays in Macau have continued to increase in December, but that there <strong>are still many uncertainties\u00a0<\/strong>for the recovery of the local economy in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aggregate\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-ggr-up-54-6-in-november\">casino GGR for the first eleven months of the year<\/a>\u00a0totals MOP78.90bn (US$9.8bn), up 50 per cent year-on-year from MOP52.62bn in 2020 while the number of tourists increased by 32 per cent to over 6 million.<strong> Gross Domestic Product increased by 27.5 per cent<\/strong> in the same period, but economic indicators are still well the pre-pandemic levels, when the city saw nearly 40 million tourists a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lei Wai Nong said: \u201cWe currently report some 30,000 visitors per day and if they are staying for longer it will be better for all sectors.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/sp-macau-ggr-could-return-to-pre-pandemic-levels-by-2023\">Analysts at Standard and Poor\u2019s Global Ratings<\/a>\u00a0have predicted that\u00a0<strong>Macau\u2019s GGR for 2022 will probably be between 60 per cent to 70 per cent of 2019 levels<\/strong>\u00a0as China\u2019s zero-Covid policy look set to continue. Authorities had predicted\u00a0<strong>GGR for 2021 could reach MOP130bn (US$16.2bn)\u00a0<\/strong>but performance is set to reach approximately 60 per cent of that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lei Wai Nong said <strong>authorities continue to work hard to maintain domestic demand<\/strong>, improve infrastructure and create better job opportunities for the construction industry. Despite the economic downturn, the 2022 public budget of the Macao Special Administrative Region still proposes a number of fiscal reduction and exemption policies, subsidies, and cash payments and to add two new tax exemptions for investment funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preparing\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-predicts-ggr-of-us16-2bn-for-2022\">next year\u2019s fiscal budget plan<\/a>, the government of Macau predicted that<strong>\u00a0GGR for 2022 will be MOP130bn (US$16.2bn)<\/strong>, half that seen before the Covid-19 pandemic.\u00a0Authorities forecast that the\u00a0<strong>city will continue to run a fiscal deficit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Macau expects up to 10 million visitors in 2022<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO), the city could receive up to 10 million visitors in 2022 if Macau finally resumes the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-continues-negotiating-with-mainland-china-on-e-visas\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">e-visa programme with China<\/a>&nbsp;and reopens borders with Hong Kong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Macao Government Tourism Office director&nbsp;<strong>Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes&nbsp;<\/strong>said: \u201cWe really hope that by the end of this year, the city will have had over 7 million visits during 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lei Wai Nong has said the number of tourists in Macaus is increasing but uncertainties remain around the potential for an economic recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":176,"featured_media":25749,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"is_press_release":false,"is_interview":false,"is_opinion":false,"focusai_summary":"Macau's Secretary of Economy and Finance, Lei Wai Nong, reports a 50% year-on-year GGR increase to MOP78.90bn for the first eleven months of 2021, alongside a 32% rise in tourist arrivals.
