{"id":25675,"date":"2021-12-17T07:58:12","date_gmt":"2021-12-17T10:58:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=25675"},"modified":"2026-04-23T12:50:32","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T15:50:32","slug":"nsw-crime-commission-invites-submissions-to-slots-inquiry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/nsw-crime-commission-invites-submissions-to-slots-inquiry","title":{"rendered":"NSW Crime Commission invites submissions to slots inquiry"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Michael Barnes, the Commissioner of the NSW Crime Commission, has invited submissions to the commission\u2019s inquiry into money laundering at pubs and clubs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Australia.- The NSW Crime Commission (NCC) and the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/ilga-calls-for-probe-into-money-laundering-via-slot-machines\">Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority (ILGA)<\/a>\u00a0have launched an inquiry to investigate money laundering using slot machines in NSW pubs and clubs.\u00a0<strong>Michael Barnes, the commissioner of the NSW Crime Commission<\/strong>, said that as part of the inquiry, the commission was calling for submissions on the nature and extent of money laundering through licensed venues in NSW.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Members of the public, academics with an interest in the area, current or past employees of pubs or clubs are invited to make submissions, which can be made confidential if desired.\u00a0The deadline for submissions is January 28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He stated: &#8220;Working with the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority and the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission,\u00a0we\u2019ve established that last year<strong> AU$85bn was gambled in poker machines in pubs and clubs in NSW<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Barnes added: &#8220;We expect the expert investigators, data analysts, lawyers and intelligence officers working on this project will uncover activities not previously known to operators or regulators that will assist to ensure pubs and clubs stay profitable while the community is protected.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The State Government welcomes the NCC and ILGA inquiry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The NCC has also revealed\u00a0that <strong>Premier Dominic Perrottet\u00a0<\/strong>is pleased that Barnes has decided to initiate an inquiry into money laundering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: &#8220;Money laundering and organised crime are completely unacceptable in any form. The NSW Crime Commission has the full backing of the NSW Government as they launch this inquiry.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>David Elliott<\/strong>, minister for police and emergency services, also welcomed the inquiry. He said: \u201cOrganised crime costs our community more than AU$36bn each year, and criminal networks are dependent on money laundering channels to legitimise the proceeds of their activities.
