Ambrose So Shu Fai has said SJM Holdings is optimistic that its gaming concession will be renewed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Macau.- The year 2021 is coming with still no clarity on the possible renewal of Macau\u2019s six gaming concessions, but <\/strong>SJM Holdings CEO Ambrose So Shu Fai<\/strong>\u00a0has told local public broadcaster TDM the company is “optimistic” about retaining its casino licence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shu Fai said: “SJM is a company rooted in Macau and I think we stand a very good chance of winning a new licence.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Macau\u2019s chief executive\u00a0Ho Iat Seng<\/strong> has been asked about\u00a0a possible renewal of Macau\u2019s six gaming concessions<\/a>\u00a0and the timetable for completing the review of Macau\u2019s gaming laws, but he hasn’t given a date. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Macau government had previously stated that the\u00a0current casino licences will expire in June 2022<\/strong> as planned and that a new open tender process would be conducted, but Macau\u2019s gaming law is due to be revised first, which makes a June tender look increasingly unlikely.\u00a0The city\u2019s gaming laws state that\u00a0licences can be extended for up to five years<\/strong>\u00a0from their original 20-year term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shu Fai also said that he believes that US casino operators in Macau will face no problems as a result of the political tensions between China and the United States.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said: “If U.S.-based casino operators obey the law and they support Macau, I think they should be welcomed rather than punished.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In November, during the presentation of MGM Resorts\u2019 financial results for the third quarter of the year,\u00a0Bill Hornbuckle<\/strong>, MGM president and CEO, said he was \u201chighly confident\u201d that\u00a0MGM China\u2019s gaming concession<\/a>\u00a0would be renewed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hornbuckle said: \u201cWhether or not this all gets done in time for June, we don\u2019t know yet. There are some steps the Macau authorities still have to go through publicly with the Legislative Assembly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added: \u201cMGM looks forward to further promoting the long-term development of Macau\u2019s gaming industry<\/strong> and to supporting the government\u2019s tourism and diversification goals for the region.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
