The bill supported by the Liberal government and Labor opposition received eight affirmative votes against five negatives at the House of Assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/tasmanian-parliament-to-discuss-new-gambling-bill-this-week\">The proposed changes<\/a>\u00a0include the introduction of\u00a0<strong>individual operating licences for electronic gaming machines<\/strong>\u00a0hosted in brick-and-mortar venues and new tax rates on gaming revenue in the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the MPs who voted against the bill, the independent <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/independent-mp-questions-tasmanian-gambling-bill\">Meg Webb<\/a>\u00a0claimed the bill \u201chas been literally written by the gambling industry.\u201d Using a Right to Information request, Webb discovered that\u00a0<strong>Federal Group and the Tasmanian Government had shaken hands on casino tax rates before the 2021 general election<\/strong>\u00a0but decided to keep the agreement secret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Independent MLCs Ruth Forrest also voted against the bill, telling ABC News: &#8220;A well-regulated monopoly would have been a better proposition.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, deputy premier Jeremy Rockliff said :&#8221;The Government believes it does strike the right balance and it&#8217;s important also that there is harm minimisation work that needs to be done as well.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added: &#8220;We recognise we need to support people with a gambling addiction.
