{"id":24602,"date":"2021-11-17T13:04:49","date_gmt":"2021-11-17T16:04:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=24602"},"modified":"2026-04-23T13:44:45","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T16:44:45","slug":"karnataka-high-court-hearing-on-gambling-ban-set-for-tomorrow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/karnataka-high-court-hearing-on-gambling-ban-set-for-tomorrow","title":{"rendered":"Karnataka High Court hearing on gambling ban set for tomorrow"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Karnataka High Court has announced that a new hearing on the petition of gaming companies who have challenged the banning of online gambling will be held on November 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>India.- The\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/india-state-of-karnataka-seeks-to-ban-online-gambling\">Karnataka state government<\/a>\u2018s decision to ban all forms of gambling in the state will face another hearing at\u00a0<strong>the Karnataka High Court tomorrow<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Karnataka announced in September that<strong>\u00a0it would amend its laws to prohibit all forms of betting gambling<\/strong>, including games of skill. The Karnataka Police Act, as amended in 1963, makes all forms of gambling (including online gambling) an identifiable crime.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The law went into effect on October 5. However, it has been challenged by at least 10 different petitioners, including the All India Game Federation (AIGF) and major Indian game companies such as Mobile Premier League and Junglee Games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/aigf-criticises-karnataka-ban-on-online-gambling\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Several companies have criticised<\/a>&nbsp;the amendment, arguing that it would damage the state\u2019s standing as a tech centre and start-up capital.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/companies-to-challenge-karnataka-online-gambling-ban\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Roland Landers<\/a><strong>, AIGF CEO<\/strong>, one of the petitioners, stated: &#8220;I sincerely believe that with the much-needed support of the relevant policymakers across the states and the centre, India can become an i-gaming superpower in the near future.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The industry has won legal victories against such bans elsewhere. In September,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/india-kerala-high-court-rejects-online-rummy-ban\">the Kerala High Court<\/a>\u00a0rejected the government&#8217;s attempt to ban online Rummy, arguing that it was a skill-based game and therefore protected by the Indian Constitution.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Petitioners including Junglee Games and Gameskraft Technologies argued that the move violated their basic right to conduct business and was therefore arbitrary and unreasonable.\u00a0In August, a similar ban issued by the government of Tamil Nadu was rejected in the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/india-madras-court-strikes-down-online-gambling-ban\">Madras High Court<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Online operators<\/strong>\u00a0had argued that since 1968 the Supreme Court has made it clear that<strong>\u00a0rummy is a game of skill and not a game of chance<\/strong>, and therefore it cannot be banned.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Karnataka High Court has announced that a new hearing on the petition of gaming companies who have challenged the banning of online gambling will be held on November 18.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":176,"featured_media":22921,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"is_press_release":false,"is_interview":false,"is_opinion":false,"focusai_summary":"The Karnataka High Court is set to hear petitions on November 18 challenging the state's ban on all forms of online gambling, including games of skill.
