Galaxy Entertainment Group has invested RMB100m (US$15.6m) in so-called green bonds to support Macau’s economic diversification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Macau.-\u00a0Galaxy Entertainment Group<\/a>\u00a0has revealed it has invested\u00a0RMB100m (US$15.6m) in green bonds\u00a0<\/strong>issued by the Bank of China Macau Branch (BOC Macau). The casino operator said\u00a0the move aim to assist with supporting the enhancement of Macau’s economy<\/strong>\u00a0through the improvement of its financial market.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last March,\u00a0Galaxy Entertainment<\/a>\u00a0subscribed to HK$100m of social bonds to support companies impacted by Covid-19. The operator said at the time that proceeds from the bonds, dubbed Covid-19 Impact Alleviation Social Bonds, would be used to provide loans and finance to SMEs impacted by the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In particular, assistance was going to be given to Macau SMEs that provide health care and medical supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company stated: “With this subscription and BOC Macau\u2019s experience in the emerging CSR financial market, GEG hopes to support the green finance strategies outlined in the country\u2019s 14th Five-Year Plan<\/strong>, advance Macau\u2019s development in finance, and promote Macau\u2019s green industry and diversification.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Analysts suggest that the upcoming retendering of Macau\u2019s casino licences<\/a>\u00a0is an opportunity to implement\u00a0changes to the licence<\/strong>\u00a0criteria<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A research paper from Pedro Cortes<\/strong>, managing partner at law firm Rato, Ling, Lei & Cortes, and Antonio Lobo Viela<\/strong>, an advisor on gaming-related matters, proposes requirements for operators to help the diversification of Macau\u2019s economy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the analysts, Macau has a weak economy that is \u201cexcessively dependent on tourism and gaming,\u201d<\/strong> something that came starkly into view after during Covid-19 countermeasures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Analysts also suggest there should be a requirement for proposals for investment in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA) <\/strong>to create an international world-class tourism destination, recognising the uniqueness of Macau\u2019s cultural and social resources.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
