Members of the Philippines’ Catholic Church have said that allowing gambling on Boracay would lead to destructive lifestyles and habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
The Philippines.-\u00a0Seven bishops and a diocesan administrator<\/strong>\u00a0from the catholic church have issued a statement against Philippines president Rodrigo Duterte\u2019s plan to allow gambling on Boracay. They say casinos would lead to destructive lifestyles<\/strong>\u00a0and habits and would cause visitors to forget the true beauty and value of the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They say that allowing gambling would “destroy the treasured values, culture and life of the community.” The Catholic church\u2019s Diocese of Kalibo<\/a>\u00a0and the Boracay Foundation Inc (BFI) had previously joined residents against the project. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Bishop Jose Corazon Tala-oc, said: \u201cBoracay is God\u2019s gift to Aklan and to the world.\u00a0It has become a family destination<\/strong>, a venue for educational advancement and entrepreneurship.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The bishop called on priests in Kalibo to\u00a0form groups against the project\u00a0<\/strong>to develop a gambling hub on the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The BFI, a non-stock, non-profit organisation that represents resorts, hotels, restaurants and other businesses in Boracay, has issued a statement saying the project should be relocated to the mainland town of Malay<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Philippine president, Rodrigo Duterte<\/a>, rekindled the possibility of allowing gambling in Boracay<\/strong>, noting that his country needs income to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Duterte said: \u201cWe don\u2019t have money now.
