{"id":22920,"date":"2021-09-23T10:59:44","date_gmt":"2021-09-23T13:59:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=22920"},"modified":"2026-04-23T15:25:33","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T18:25:33","slug":"increased-supervision-over-macau-casinos-could-hurt-premium-mass-market","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/increased-supervision-over-macau-casinos-could-hurt-premium-mass-market","title":{"rendered":"Increased supervision over Macau casinos could hurt premium mass market"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>According to Ben Lee, managing partner of iGamiX Management &amp; Consulting, Macau could lose 80 per cent of its premium mass business due to the proposed changes to the city\u2019s gaming laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Macau.- Concerns continue to be raised about the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-likely-to-end-sub-concessions-system-for-casino-operators\">revision of the city\u2019s gaming law<\/a>\u00a0and the possibility\u00a0<strong>of increased oversight of gaming concessionaires and junket operations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ben Lee, managing partner of iGamiX Management &amp; Consulting<\/strong>, has expressed his disagreement with the decision to\u00a0<strong>elect \u201cdelegates\u201d to Macau\u2019s gaming concessions\u00a0<\/strong>in order to have \u201cgreater checking\u201d on the activity of the gaming firms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In statements to Asian Gaming Brief Lee said: &#8220;This direct supervision aspect has been puzzling. There\u2019s no way any government representative would be familiar with the commercial and financial transactions and processes that go on in large casinos.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You need to think about what they are after, what their intentions are, and what they are looking to supervise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added<strong> that the government&#8217;s desire for increased supervision may be related to the active promotion of gambling activities in China\u00a0<\/strong>and referred to Beijing&#8217;s crackdown that includes the suppression of entertainment and video games.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee pointed out that<strong>\u00a0Beijing will not be interested in live and promotional activities in Macau<\/strong>, as this is already managed by DICJ. He said: \u201cThe only area that would be an area that they currently don\u2019t have insight into is the operator\u2019s promotional activities into China.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee said there is an emerging casino approach that embeds marketing executives into their MICE team. He said allowing someone into the casino structure would theoretically let them mine promotion activities and report them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He concluded that<strong>\u00a0if Beijing stops all forms of promotion, nearly 80 per cent of the premium mass business will disappear<\/strong>\u00a0as people would only go to Macau under their own steam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/casino-operators-request-more-info-on-macau-gaming-law-changes\">meeting with Macau\u2019s six casino operators<\/a>,\u00a0<strong>Ku Mei Leng, chief-of-office at Macau\u2019s Secretary for Economy and Finance<\/strong>, said that the public authority didn\u2019t have any \u201cpredetermined positions\u201d as it was still collecting opinions from the industry regarding the proposed changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-consultation-on-gaming-law-to-open-on-september-15\">A consultation<\/a>\u00a0on gaming law will run until October 29.
