She says the development could attract up to 3,000 foreign tourists a week and create 10,000 jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Domingo also said that\u00a0<strong>concerns about environmental issues were unfounded<\/strong>, citing a study. She said a company would not invest in the island &#8220;just to make garbage and destroy the ocean.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However,\u00a0<strong>residents, businessmen and environmental activists have shown concern\u00a0<\/strong>about the possible\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/boracay-residents-and-businesses-reject-gambling-on-the-island\">casino development<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Kalikasan People\u2019s Network for the Environment\u00a0<\/strong>has said that amid the Covid-19 pandemic and restrictions, casinos cannot contribute to economic recovery as tourist visitation remain restricted. The group added\u00a0<strong>authorities should focus on increasing the vaccination rate<\/strong>\u00a0on the island to allow the return of foreign visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Casino proposals for Boracay<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are currently\u00a0<strong>two proposals for Boracay<\/strong>. LRWC seeks to work on a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/lrwc-seeks-to-re-partner-with-galaxy-for-boracay-casino\">casino resort<\/a>\u00a0with Galaxy Entertainment Group. However,\u00a0<strong>Brokerage Sanford C. Bernstein Ltd<\/strong>\u00a0is cautious about the possibility of Galaxy Entertainment being interested in Boracay now as it faces the expiry of its current Macau gaming rights in June 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An original project was announced in December 2017 and LRWC bought the parcels of land in Boracay for\u00a0<strong>US$500m<\/strong> before <strong>Duterte closed the island destination to tourism\u00a0<\/strong>due to concerns for the environment, leading <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/boracay-casino-plans\">LRWC to drop drop its plan.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second project belongs to billionaire\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/geri-plans-boracay-casino-despite-opposition\">Andrew Tan<\/a>, chief executive officer and vice chairman of Tan\u2019s Global-Estate Resorts, Inc. (GERI). He has said he intends to\u00a0<strong>go ahead despite opposition from residents and environmental groups<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tan said: \u201cWe already have several hotels there and we are still building more.
