{"id":21882,"date":"2021-08-23T13:17:36","date_gmt":"2021-08-23T16:17:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=21882"},"modified":"2026-04-23T16:24:47","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T19:24:47","slug":"hong-kong-policeman-sentenced-for-running-illegal-gambling-den","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/hong-kong-policeman-sentenced-for-running-illegal-gambling-den","title":{"rendered":"Hong Kong: policeman sentenced for running illegal gambling den"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Ng Hin-fung has been sentenced to a maximum of two years and six months in prison for running an illegal poker house and for breaching Covid-19 countermeasures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Hong Kong.-\u00a0<strong>Ng Hin-fung<\/strong>, a Hong Kong policeman, has been sentenced to up to two years and six months in prison after\u00a0<strong>officers found he was involved in running an illegal gambling den<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to South China Morning Post, Ng Hin-fung, together with the other two people, has also been sentenced for breach of restrictions regarding group gatherings.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ng Hin-fung was arrested during\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/hong-kong-65-arrested-in-raid-on-illegal-gambling-den\">a raid in April<\/a>\u00a0in which officers arrested <strong>65 people aged between 18 and 54<\/strong>. The officer was<strong>\u00a0suspended from duty<\/strong>. He has been released on bail for HK$10,000 (US$1,280) until the next hearing on October 11. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The court heard that\u00a0<strong>the illegal casino operated in a 1,600 square foot industrial unit\u00a0<\/strong>and offered poker games from March 27 to April 8. Some <strong>39 were charged with illegal gambling<\/strong>, while an insurance agent faced charges of preventing police from entering the gambling establishment.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to current gambling laws, <strong>operating a gambling establishment is punishable by two years in prison<\/strong>\u00a0and a HK$5m fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">824 people arrested in a series of raids<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/hong-kong-824-arrested-over-illegal-gambling-on-euro-2020\">Authorities in Hong Kong<\/a>\u00a0reported that<strong>\u00a0824 people were arrested for illegal gambling\u00a0<\/strong>during a series of police raids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to officers, those arrested were involved in&nbsp;<strong>illegal gambling operations related to the UEFA Euro 2020<\/strong>&nbsp;tournament. Police carried out&nbsp;<strong>137 raids,&nbsp;<\/strong>arresting 475 men and 349 women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Officers seized US$463m. According to the South China Morning Post, it\u2019s&nbsp;<strong>the largest amount of money seized from illegal gambling&nbsp;<\/strong>operations in almost 10 years.
