One of them was Amit Raghav who was part of a betting racket and was close to Amit Kumar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Officers discovered that both\u00a0<strong>Raghav and Kumar carried out illegal gambling rackets and collected money from gamblers<\/strong>. Police also suspect Kumar was involved with bar owners who were breaching Covid-19 countermeasures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An officer stated: &#8220;We found that Kumar was actively in touch with all the bar owners and managers in the area. During questioning, he admitted he called them regularly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In June,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/india-4-arrested-after-police-bust-cricket-betting-racket\">police in Andhra Pradesh<\/a>\u00a0busted an<strong>\u00a0illegal cricket betting racket\u00a0<\/strong>that was taking bets on the sixth edition of the Pakistan Super League. According to local media,\u00a0<strong>four people were arrested through a joint operation<\/strong>\u00a0between the City Task Force and the PM Palem Police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the raid,<strong>\u00a0police seized SIM cards<\/strong>, 29 mobile phones, laptops, TV sets, five account books and<strong>\u00a0INR1,590 (US$21.70)<\/strong>. Police said<strong>\u00a0the cricket betting racket<\/strong>\u00a0operated on the match between Quetta Gladiators and Peshawar Zalmi, and the match between Quetta Gladiators and Peshawar Zalmi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cricket remains India\u2019s most popular sport<\/strong>. There is a huge underground cricket betting market said to be worth between US$45bn and US$150bn a year. Around 80 per cent of illegal sports betting in India is on Cricket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However,&nbsp;<strong>Shabir Hussein Shekhadam Khandwawala<\/strong>, the head of the<strong>&nbsp;Anti-Corruption Unit of the Board of Control for Cricket in India&nbsp;<\/strong>(BCCI), said that he is firmly against the possibility of<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/indian-cricket-chief-against-legalisation-of-sports-betting\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">legalising sports betting<\/a><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike<strong>&nbsp;his predecessor<\/strong>, who had stated that<strong>&nbsp;legalising betting would be the most effective&nbsp;<\/strong>means of preventing corruption within the game, Khandwawala believes legal&nbsp;<strong>sports<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>betting would encourage match-fixing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201c<strong>We can make the rules more strict<\/strong>. We will work on that. It is a matter of great prestige that cricket is largely free of corruption.
