Macau\u2019s GGR was down 37 per cent week-on-week due to local Covid-19 cases and the decline in tourist arrivals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Macau.-\u00a0Macau\u2019s Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR)\u00a0<\/strong>continues to decline. In the second week of August, GGR was MOP78m(US$9.7m), down 37 per cent when compared to\u00a0MOP125m (US$15.6m) in the first week<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The figure, the lowest since last September<\/strong>, was the result of a\u00a0community outbreak of Covid-19<\/a>\u00a0during the first week of August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sanford C. Bernstein<\/strong>\u00a0Ltd said Macau’s GGR plummeted due to travel restrictions intensified by mainland China due to the outbreak. The number of visitors declined 78 per cent<\/strong>\u00a0when compared to the previous month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to authorities, the situation is now under control. The government carried out\u00a0mass testing for Covid-19<\/a>\u00a0in which\u00a0716,251 people were tested<\/strong>, all of them returning negative results. Leisure venues will be allowed to reopen from August 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Macau’s GGR for the first fifteen days of August was\u00a0MOP1.55bn (US$193m)<\/strong>. The month-to-date average daily rate is MOP103m (US$13m), down 87 per cent when compared to August 2019 levels and down 62 per cent compared to\u00a0July’s figures<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Analysts expected Macau\u2019s GGR for August<\/a> to be down 60 per cent when compared to August 2019<\/strong> and down 30 per cent when compared to July 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andy Wu Keng Kuong<\/a>, president of Macau Travel Industry Council, said the city expects an\u00a0average hotel occupancy rate of less than 50 per cent<\/strong>\u00a0for the month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said: \u201cWe hope that the local Covid-19\u00a0situation can be controlled within 14 days<\/strong>\u00a0so that hospitality businesses here can gradually pick up starting from late August.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Macau International Airport Co Ltd<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>revealed that nearly\u00a01,200 flights out of 2,000 were cancelled <\/strong>amid the emergence of local Covid-19 cases in Macau.
