Macau International Airport Co Ltd has reported that almost 60 per cent of China-Macau flights have been cancelled amid a community outbreak of Covid-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Macau.-\u00a0Macau International Airport Co Ltd\u00a0<\/strong>has revealed that nearly\u00a01,200 flights out of 2,000 have been cancelled from a total of 2,000\u00a0<\/strong>in recent days, mainly between Macau and mainland China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although\u00a0there has no been an official explanation<\/strong>, it seems the majority of the cancellations could be due to the detection of local cases of Covid-19 on August 3. The day after the announcement, the\u00a0daily tally of visitor numbers plummeted by 86.1 per cent to 1,800<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Macau has carried out\u00a0mass testing for Covid-19<\/a>\u00a0in which\u00a0716,251 people were tested<\/strong>, all of them returning negative results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities<\/a>\u00a0recently announced an extension for the\u00a0validity of negative Covid-19 tests for visitors from Guangdong province to 48 hours<\/strong>. The measure covers direct inbound and outbound land trips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Macau\u2019s Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR)<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>declined by 48 per cent in the first week of August, just ahead of the summer holiday period when Macau expected a rise in GGR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andy Wu Keng Kuong<\/strong>, president of Macau Travel Industry Council, said the city now expects an average hotel occupancy rate of less than 50 per cent<\/strong> for August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said: \u201cWe hope that the local Covid-19 situation can be controlled within 14 days<\/strong> so that hospitality businesses here can gradually pick up starting from late August.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Casinos remain open, though Couglan said a\u00a0return to \u201cnormal levels\u201d of business will depend on an increase in the vaccination rate\u00a0<\/strong>in the city and its neighbouring provinces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sanford C. Bernstein Ltd<\/a>\u00a0has predicted that Macau\u2019s GGR for August could be down 60 per cent compared to August 2019.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
