Australian\u2011licensed wagering providers who previously criticised a proposal to ban credit card gambling now support the measure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Australia.- Sports betting operators in Australia have now promised to support changes to the\u00a0Interactive Gambling Amendment Act 2017<\/strong>\u00a0to ban credit card spending on online gambling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May, members of\u00a0Responsible Wagering Australia (RWA)<\/strong>, an independent trade advocacy body for\u00a0Australian\u2011licensed wagering providers<\/a>, came out against the proposal. The companies claimed\u00a0there was no evidence<\/strong>\u00a0of a relationship between using credit cards for online betting and gambling problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the time,\u00a0companies<\/strong>\u00a0said a ban on credit cards could lead to an increase in overseas gambling platforms that offered their services illegally to local customers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the companies have now said\u00a0they will develop a technical solution<\/strong> to introduce the change. They’ve sought the\u00a0assistance of the largest banks and payment processing operators in Australia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Queensland MP Andrew Wallace, who is one of the main promoters of the ban on credit cards, said in March that his proposal had the support of\u00a0Australia\u2019s biggest banks<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He argued that \u201cthe high interest rates and a high chance of loss could result in\u00a0serious gambling-related harm<\/strong>\u00a0for many people and families in Australia.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tabcorp<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>has said that it\u00a0won\u2019t oppose the implementation of a ban on credit cards<\/strong>\u00a0for online gambling in Australia as long as customers could still buy lottery tickets at shops and newsagents. The company said the\u00a0measure would need at least a year to be implemented\u00a0<\/strong>to allow the industry time to adapt to the changes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
