{"id":20989,"date":"2021-08-03T07:12:48","date_gmt":"2021-08-03T10:12:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=20989"},"modified":"2026-04-23T17:00:52","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T20:00:52","slug":"australia-vcglr-to-be-replaced-by-a-new-casino-control-commission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/australia-vcglr-to-be-replaced-by-a-new-casino-control-commission","title":{"rendered":"Australia: VCGLR to be replaced by new Casino Control Commission"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Authorities have announced the creation of a new Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCC), which will replace the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation (VCGLR).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Australia.- In order to tighten controls over casino operators and gambling venues, authorities have announced the\u00a0<strong>creation of a new regulator for the state of Victoria. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCC)<\/strong> will replace the VCGLR and eventually control and monitor all\u00a0<strong>gambling and gaming services<\/strong>\u00a0in the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Melissa Horne,\u00a0<\/strong>the state\u2019s minister for consumer affairs, gaming and liquor regulation, said the VGCC would be stricter than the VCFLR and it wouldn&#8217;t tolerate unethical practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nobody has yet been appointed to <strong>chair the new gambling commission<\/strong>. The VCGLR will continue monitoring the local casino sector until the VGCC is established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Deborah Cope<\/strong>, a regulatory and public policy reform expert, has said the new regulatory body will have a\u00a0<strong>dedicated division for employees working on the regulation of casino services<\/strong>\u00a0and will employ people with expertise in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Crown Melbourne employees didn\u2019t encourage high-gamblers to take time out<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Last month,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/crown-melbourne-unprepared-to-prevent-gambling-harms-inquiry-hears\">Victoria\u2019s Royal Commission<\/a>\u00a0heard that\u00a0<strong>Crown Melbourne employees\u00a0<\/strong>were not prepared to discourage people from gambling after spending hours inside the venue. An employee told the inquiry that\u00a0<strong>he warned gamblers they could lose their VIP status\u00a0<\/strong>if they chose to self-exclude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A poker dealer at<strong>&nbsp;Crown Melbourne also said he wasn\u2019t sure what \u201cresponsible service of gaming\u201d meant<\/strong>.
