{"id":20774,"date":"2021-07-28T16:54:47","date_gmt":"2021-07-28T16:54:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=20774"},"modified":"2026-04-23T17:09:18","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T20:09:18","slug":"australia-queensland-to-launch-a-new-plan-on-gambling-harm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/australia-queensland-to-launch-a-new-plan-on-gambling-harm","title":{"rendered":"Australia: Queensland to launch a new plan on gambling harm"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The government of Queensland has announced a new four-year plan to minimise gambling-related harms as part of the Responsible Gambling Awareness Week (RGAW) 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Australia.-\u00a0<strong>Shannon Fentiman<\/strong>, Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, has revealed the government of\u00a0<strong>Queensland will introduce a new plan to minimise gambling-related harms<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Announced as part of<strong>\u00a0Responsible Gambling Awareness Week (RGAW) 2021<\/strong>, the four-year plan aims to reduce the negative consequences associated with gambling in the Australian state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fentiman said <strong>70 per cent of local people gamble<\/strong>, according to a recent survey. Although only a small number of them have gambling problems, the Government wants to protect all gamblers from potential harms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plan contemplates more\u00a0<strong>social responsibility from the gambling sector<\/strong>\u00a0and casino operators. It will focus on the implementation of technological systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also intends to monitor <strong>the gambling habits of young people<\/strong>\u00a0as the government believes they are more susceptible to the negative consequences of gambling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In March,\u00a0<strong>Queensland MP Andrew Wallace<\/strong>\u00a0said Australia\u2019s four biggest banks backed plans to\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/australian-banks-support-credit-card-ban-on-online-gambling\">ban credit card<\/a>\u00a0spending on online gambling. Some banks have already introduced a ban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/australian-gambling-companies-against-block-on-credit-cards\">the measure was criticised<\/a>\u00a0by the\u00a0<strong>Responsible Wagering Australia (RWA)<\/strong>, an independent trade advocacy body for Australian\u2011licensed wagering providers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The body argued that there was&nbsp;<strong>no evidence for a link between problem gambling<\/strong>&nbsp;and the use of credit cards for online gambling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Australian gambling harm-reduction tools<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A study by the&nbsp;<strong>University of Sydney\u2019s Gambling Treatment and Research Clinic (GTRC)<\/strong>&nbsp;reported that&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/study-finds-australians-dont-use-gambling-harm-reduction-tools\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gambling harm minimisation tools<\/a>&nbsp;implemented by the government have had little impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research focused on&nbsp;<strong>self-exclusion<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>deposit limit tools<\/strong>. It found that the first tool affected online gambling behaviour but that players don\u2019t use the tool if it\u2019s voluntary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for deposit limits,&nbsp;<strong>6,000 people who used the tool stuck to the limits&nbsp;<\/strong>for about a year, while one in four decided to change their betting limits to make them less restrictive. One in eight gamblers unsubscribed from the programme.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite this,&nbsp;<strong>Sally Gainsbury<\/strong>, one of the study\u2019s authors, said the self-exclusion and betting limit tools had&nbsp;<strong>proved to be successful.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said the number of\u00a0<strong>people who set a deposit limit for gambling increased after the introduction of the self-exclusion system<\/strong>.
