Macau\u2019s secretary for economy and finance has said a public consultation on gaming law will be held in the second half of this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Macau.- Macau\u2019s secretary for economy and finance has confirmed that a public consultation will go ahead in the second half of the year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The announcement comes amid growing speculation that Macau will extend its current gaming concessions<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last November, authorities said insisted that the\u00a0public tender to renew casino licences<\/a>\u00a0would not be delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and that\u00a0new legislation would be ready<\/strong>\u00a0in time\u00a0<\/strong>for when licences expire in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, that will depend on the length of the public consultation and on the\u00a0upcoming Legislative Assembly elections<\/strong>. Several industry experts believe the process will be delayed\u00a0<\/strong>until after the\u00a0elections<\/a> so that new legislators will be in charge of amending Macau’s gaming law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ho Iat Seng,\u00a0Macau\u2019s Chief Executive<\/strong>, has said that the budget deficit caused by the Covid-19 pandemic should be fixed through diversifying the economy, and that this objective will form part of the consultation on gaming rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In April, experts on gaming law released a\u00a0research paper<\/a>\u00a0proposing the city\u2019s gaming licence criteria require \u201ccommitments relating to several non-core activities.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The paper noted that\u00a0Macau was \u201cexcessively dependent on tourism and gaming<\/strong>“. Analysts also suggest there should be a requirement\u00a0for investment in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA)\u00a0<\/strong>to create an international world-class tourism destination that recognises the uniqueness of Macau\u2019s cultural and social resources.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
