Lei Wai Nong, Macau\u2019s secretary for economy and finance, still expects GGR to reach MOP130bn (US$16.2bn) for 2021 despite lower than expected results in the first half.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Macau.- Lei Wai Nong, Macau\u2019s secretary for economy and finance, has said that the government is sticking to its forecast that\u00a0casino gross gaming revenue<\/a>\u00a0for 2021\u00a0will reach MOP130bn (US$16.28bn)<\/strong> \u2013 44.5 per cent of 2019\u2032s MOP292.5bn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s despite the fact that Macau’s GGR during the first half of the year was MOP49bn<\/strong>, nearly 25 per cent less than authorities expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the government made its forecast for the year, it assumed a travel bubble<\/a>\u00a0between Macau and Hong Kong would be in place by now, but that’s now not expected until September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mainland China<\/strong>\u00a0continues to be the only country to have a\u00a0largely quarantine-free travel bubble<\/a>\u00a0with Macau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GGR fell in June<\/a>\u00a0after months of improvement, registering a decline of 37 per cent to\u00a0MOP$6.54bn ($817.3m)<\/strong>, down from\u00a0MOP10.45bn (US$1.31bn)<\/strong>\u00a0in May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Macau expects recovery in second half of the year<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to Lei Wai Nong,\u00a0Macau may see a recovery in the second half of the year<\/strong>\u00a0thanks to the so-called “golden periods.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lei Wai Nong said: \u201cWe have summer holidays, the National Day Golden Week<\/strong>\u00a0[in October], the Grand Prix in November, plus December \u2013 traditionally a time when people vacation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sanford C. Bernstein<\/a>\u00a0has forecast that Macau\u2019s GGR could reach 89 per cent of pre-pandemic levels in 2022 and that it will grow more than 11 per cent in 2025.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
