Fitch Ratings Inc predicts Macau\u2019s gross gaming revenue (GGR) will return to 2019 levels by 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Macau.-\u00a0Fitch Ratings Inc<\/strong> has\u00a0predicted that\u00a0Macau’s GGR will reach pre-pandemic levels by 2024<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prediction comes as the agency gave MGM Resorts International, the US-based parent company of Macau casino firm\u00a0MGM China Holdings Ltd<\/strong>, a BB- rating because of weaker financial flexibility due to sale-leaseback transactions over the past few years and higher rent costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Analysts said the negative outlook reflects the\u00a0risks and uncertainty the gaming industry is facing\u00a0<\/strong>due to the Covid-19 pandemic especially where casino operators rely on international tourists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agency said that Macau can expect a 53 per cent GDP economic rebound in 2021,\u00a0<\/strong>while Macau’s GGR will reach half of the pre-pandemic levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June, after five months of growth,\u00a0Macau registered its lowest GGR<\/a>\u00a0since November 2020, with a drop of 37 per cent month-on-month. However, the number represents an increase of\u00a0813 per cent from June 2020,\u00a0<\/strong>when the city registered GGR of MOP$716m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The drop was partly due to\u00a0an outbreak of Covid-19 cases<\/a>\u00a0in the neighbouring province of Guangdong, which led Macau to tighten\u00a0Covid-19 countermeasures at casinos<\/a>\u00a0and other tourism venues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Macau\u2019s GGR for the first six months of the year stands at MOP$49.02bn, up 45.4 per cent<\/strong> from the MOP$33.72bn in the first six months of 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
