Cambodia.- Authorities in Cambodia have\u00a0shut down seven illegal gambling dens in Phnom Penh<\/strong>\u00a0and warned of legal action against the owners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to officers, the\u00a0gambling dens\u00a0<\/strong>used a digital system to allow players to top up their accounts and gamble via their phones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Municipal police spokesman San Sok Seiha said: “Police did not detain any suspects<\/strong>, but instructed them not to engage in illegal online gambling activities, which is contrary to the instructions of the municipal administration.”\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n He added that if owners don’t follow the rules,\u00a0police will implement strict measures<\/strong>\u00a0and may make arrests. <\/p>\n\n\n\n In June, police in Cambodia arrested 45 people for illegal gambling <\/strong>and for breaking the Covid-19 social distancing rules in five different raids.\u00a0All\u00a045 were released after signing an agreement\u00a0<\/strong>not to repeat the offences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Cambodian citizens are only allowed to gamble through the government’s national lotteries<\/strong>. They were allowed to play slot machine games in the past, but due to complaints of violence and problem gambling, authorities banned slots in 2009.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In a bid to control the spread of the Covid-19 Delta strain<\/strong>, authorities have closed Cambodia’s borders with Thailand and Vietnam. The measure\u00a0will have an impact on Cambodian casinos\u00a0<\/strong>that attract Vietnamese and Thai residents.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n In April, Donaco<\/a> reported that revenue for the first quarter of the year 2021 was down from AU$6m in the previous quarter to AU$2.8m.
