{"id":19735,"date":"2021-07-01T13:46:51","date_gmt":"2021-07-01T13:46:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=19735"},"modified":"2026-04-23T18:02:15","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T21:02:15","slug":"macau-ggr-falls-37-in-june","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-ggr-falls-37-in-june","title":{"rendered":"Macau GGR falls 37% in June"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>After five months of growth, Macau has registered its lowest GGR since November 2020, with a drop of 37 per cent month-on-month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Macau.-&nbsp;<strong>Macau\u2019s Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR)&nbsp;<\/strong>fell in June after months of improvement, registering a decline of 37 per cent to <strong>MOP$6.54bn ($817.3m)<\/strong>, down from&nbsp;<strong>MOP10.45bn (US$1.31bn)<\/strong> in May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the number represents an increase of <strong>813 per cent from June 2020, <\/strong>when the city registered GGR of MOP$716m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The result was in line with expectations as&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-ggr-to-drop-30-in-june-analysts-say\">Bernstein<\/a>&nbsp;had predicted&nbsp;<strong>GGR for June would be down<\/strong>&nbsp;30 per cent month-on-month. The drop was partly due to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-tightens-controls-amid-rise-in-covid-19-cases-in-guangdong\">an outbreak of Covid-19 cases<\/a>&nbsp;in the neighbouring province of Guangdong which led Macau to tighten <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-to-resume-covid-19-countermeasures\">Covid-19 countermeasures at casinos<\/a>&nbsp;and other tourism venues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the decline can also be explained because of the increase in custom during the Labour Day break in May. <strong>Macau\u2019s GGR is usually weaker in June<\/strong>&nbsp;when compared to other months. Analysts expect a further recovery in July and August during the summer holiday period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Macau&#8217;s GGR for the first six months of the year stands at&nbsp;<strong>MOP$49.02bn, up 45.4 per cent<\/strong>&nbsp;from the MOP$33.72bn in the first six months of 2020. May saw the highest GGR of the year to date, mainly thanks to the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-received-165500-visitors-arrivals-over-labour-day-break\">Labour Day break<\/a>, when Macau\u2019s Public Security Police reported that&nbsp;<strong>165,500 tourists came to Macau<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Macau plan to ease restrictions with Hong Kong<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Macau government is reported to be planning to allow&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-plans-to-ease-travel-restrictions-with-hong-kong\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">quarantine-free inbound travel<\/a><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>to people coming from Hong Kong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to JP Morgan Securities,&nbsp;<strong>visitors could be allowed to enter casino resorts and hotels<\/strong>&nbsp;but will have to comply with stricter rules limiting their movements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>JP Morgan analysts said: \u201cOur checks with some Macau hotels suggest the government sent out a notice a few days ago on<strong>&nbsp;a planned reopening of the border<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now, people coming from Hong Kong need to undergo&nbsp;<strong>a 14-day quarantine&nbsp;<\/strong>but a reopening scheme seems to be closer than ever although limited to fully vaccinated travellers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The news would be welcomed by the tourism and gaming sectors as&nbsp;<strong>Hong Kong provides 10 to 15 per cent&nbsp;<\/strong>of Macau\u2019s annual casino gross gaming revenue (GGR).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After five months of growth, Macau has registered its lowest GGR since November 2020, with a drop of 37 per cent month-on-month.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":176,"featured_media":17167,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"is_press_release":false,"is_interview":false,"is_opinion":false,"focusai_summary":"Macau's Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) declined 37% month-on-month in June to MOP$6.54bn, marking its lowest since November 2020, primarily attributed to a COVID-19 outbreak in Guangdong and the absence of May's Labour Day holiday boost.
