{"id":19594,"date":"2021-06-29T15:41:45","date_gmt":"2021-06-29T15:41:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=19594"},"modified":"2026-04-23T18:08:02","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T21:08:02","slug":"vietnam-locals-access-to-casinos-to-be-extended-until-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/vietnam-locals-access-to-casinos-to-be-extended-until-2024","title":{"rendered":"Vietnam: locals&#8217; access to casinos to be extended until 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Vietnamese authorities are willing to extend the permission for selected casinos to allow economically qualified locals to gamble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Vietnam.- The Ministry of Finance has proposed an extension of the scheme that allows\u00a0<strong>Vietnamese citizens\u00a0<\/strong>to gamble at selected casinos until 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At present,&nbsp;<strong>Vietnamese citizens are only permitted to enter two casinos:<\/strong>&nbsp;one on the southern island of Phu Quoc and the other in Van Don, in the northern province of Quang Ninh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government has tight restrictions on who can enter the properties:&nbsp;<strong>players must be aged over 21 and earn a minimum of VND$10m (US$430) a month<\/strong>. Players must also have no criminal record and no objections from their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>scheme was to be reviewed next year, <\/strong>but the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and lack of tourism have led authorities to extend the permission on locals&#8217; access to casinos until 2024. The proposal must be reviewed by the country\u2019s prime minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In March,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/vietnam-casinos-ask-government-to-let-locals-gamble\">casino operators<\/a>\u00a0asked the government to expand\u00a0<strong>Vietnamese citizens\u2019 access to casinos<\/strong>\u00a0in major tourism destinations such as\u00a0<strong>Quang Nam and Ba Ria-Vung Tau<\/strong>\u00a0to help casinos face the loss of revenue from tourists owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/vietnam-casinos-request-to-expand-locals-access-goes-unheard\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the government<\/a>&nbsp;has stated the current scheme won&#8217;t be expanded to other casino operators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Vietnam tightens rules on money laundering<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/vietnam-to-tighten-law-on-casinos-and-money-laundering\">Vietnam Ministry of Finance<\/a>\u00a0is working on\u00a0<strong>a new decree that introduces penalties of up to VND200m<\/strong>\u00a0if a casino operates without a certificate of eligibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The decree will also introduce&nbsp;<strong>fines of between VND40m and VND50m for casino operators that fail to report suspicious transactions<\/strong>&nbsp;as prescribed by law.
