With almost all of Yokohama’s mayoral candidates against an IR development, analysts are starting to wonder whether Tokyo could step into the contest to host an IR.

Japan.- With Yokohama’s chances of hosting an integrated resort in doubt as almost all mayoral candidates voice opposition to a casino, analysts have begun to wonder if that could leave the door open for Tokyo to bid for an integrated resort licence.

However, a survey by a local newspaper found that 66 per cent are against an IR development and only 24 per cent of are in favour, which makes the chances seem remote.

That leaves Nagasaki as one of the most well-prepared cities to gain one of Japan’s planned three licences despite an anti-IR group‘s recent petition.

In Wakayama, Clairvest Neem Ventures is the only remaining contender for its IR bid. The prefecture was left with little choice after Suncity Group withdrew from the process due to uncertainty caused by the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In Osaka, MGM-Orix remains the only contender despite an extension of the deadline for submissions.

According to local media, Osaka’s authorities now fear they won’t be able to control the conditions for the IR development plans due to the risk of MGM pulling out of the tender.
