Macau authorities believe an outbreak of Covid-19 cases in Guangdong province may have affected Macau’s recovery and visitor arrivals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Macau.- According to the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) the city could receive between\u00a07 and 8 million visitors this year<\/strong>. That compares to previous forecasts of between\u00a06 and 10 million arrivals<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new predictions come after\u00a0Macau’s GGR<\/a>\u00a0fell 24 per cent in the third week of June when compared to the\u00a0previous week<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Macao Government Tourism Office director\u00a0Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes said a\u00a0<\/strong>rise in Covid-19 cases in the\u00a0province of Guangdong<\/a>\u00a0had caused a negative impact on Macau\u2019s visitor arrivals for June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the first five months of the year, Macau had nearly 3.4 million visitors, up 4.7 per cent year-on-year. In May, the city received 866,000 visitors, with 165,500 during the\u00a0<\/strong>Labour Day break<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite being a good performance, numbers were a long way from 2019 levels, when Macau registered 531,000 visitors <\/strong>arrivals during what was a four-day break in 2019 (this year the Labour Day break was extended).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For now, mainland China<\/strong> is the only country to have a largely quarantine-free travel bubble<\/a> with Macau. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plans to launch a\u00a0travel bubble<\/a>\u00a0between Hong Kong and Macau have been halted again after a case of the Delta variant of Covid-19 was detected in Hong Kong, which means Hong Kong won\u2019t reach the\u00a028 days without a local Covid-19 case<\/strong>\u00a0that Macau set as a condition for travel bubble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to\u00a0Bernstein Research<\/a>,\u00a0Macau\u2019s gross gaming revenue (GGR)\u00a0<\/strong>could reach MOP10.72bn in June \u2013 45 per cent of pre-pandemic levels<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
