{"id":19397,"date":"2021-06-24T15:49:42","date_gmt":"2021-06-24T15:49:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=19397"},"modified":"2026-04-23T18:14:48","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T21:14:48","slug":"former-crown-employee-wants-to-be-called-as-witness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/former-crown-employee-wants-to-be-called-as-witness","title":{"rendered":"Former Crown employee wants to be called as witness"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Jenny Jiang, who was detained in China in 2016 along with 18 other employees for breaking Chinese gambling laws, wants to be called to give more details about Crown Resorts&#8217; operations in China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Australia.- As Royal Commissions into Crown Resorts continue in Victoria and Western Australia,&nbsp;<strong>a former Crown Resorts employee <\/strong>has said she wants to be called as a witness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jenny Jiang was working for Crown Resorts when&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/victorias-royal-commission-to-examine-crown-staff-arrests-in-china\">19 Crown employees were arrested in China<\/a>&nbsp;in 2016. Her testimony about how the casino operator put profits before the safety of its staff led to a<strong>&nbsp;media investigation that revealed money laundering&nbsp;<\/strong>through Crown Resorts casinos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That led the New South Wales Independent Liquor &amp; Gaming Authority (ILGA) to start <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/ilga-crown-resorts-unsuitable-to-operate-barangaroo-casino\">an inquiry into Crown Resorts<\/a>, which found the operator to be&nbsp;<strong>\u201cquite unsuitable\u201d to hold a licence<\/strong>&nbsp;for its new casino in Barangaroo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to ABC, Jenny Jiang has said <strong>she is &#8220;a critical witness&#8221;<\/strong>&nbsp;who can &#8220;give evidence about the human cost of Crown&#8217;s conduct which the royal commission needs to hear to do its job properly.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time of the original media investigations,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/vcglr-criticises-crown-resorts-over-2019-ad\">Crown Resorts<\/a>&nbsp;issued an advertisement&nbsp;<strong>signed by all 11 Crown directors<\/strong>, including former executive chairman, Helen Coonan, attacking the investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jiang said Crown Resorts never apologised to her after the company attacked her credibility in the advertisement, although Coonan later admitted&nbsp;<strong>the advertisement was inappropriate&nbsp;<\/strong>and that Jiang deserved an apology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last December,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/crown-whistleblower-sues-company-for-damages\">Jiang sued the company<\/a>&nbsp;alleging that t<strong>he firm\u2019s actions had hurt her and her family<\/strong>, as she was called a \u201cgold digger\u201d for having blown the whistle on Crown after the 2016 incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time, Jiang\u2019s lawyer, Jeremy King, said she wanted to shine a light on<strong>&nbsp;Crown\u2019s disregard for employees<\/strong>&nbsp;and its breaches of its duty of care as an employer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>King said: \u201cCrown\u2019s treatment has really impacted on her psychologically and continues to impact her on a day to day basis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jiang lawyers were initially contacted by the Victorian Royal Commission, but she said she has not been contacted again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the Commission has said it was required &#8220;not to duplicate the work of the Bergin Inquiry&#8221; so&nbsp;<strong>it was not necessary to call Jiang for now<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/victorias-royal-commission-extends-inquiry-into-crown-resorts\">Victoria\u2019s Royal Commission<\/a>&nbsp;into&nbsp;<strong>Crown Resorts has announced it will continue up to October 15<\/strong>&nbsp;after the government approved judge Raymond Finkelstein\u2019s request for an extension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finkelstein also asked for&nbsp;<strong>an increase in the commission\u2019s funding from AU$10m to AU$19.75m<\/strong>&nbsp;to continue investigating Crown Resorts suitability to maintain its licence for its&nbsp;<strong>Melbourne casino<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The judge leading the state of Victoria\u2019s inquiry was originally due to<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/crown-resorts-royal-commission-aims-to-report-by-august-1\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">release his report by August 1<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the last session of&nbsp;<strong>public hearings into Crown Resorts<\/strong>, Ann Siegers, Crown\u2019s chief risk officer, referred to the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/crown-legal-chief-dismissed-money-laundering-risks-inquiry-hears\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">arrest of 19 Crown executives<\/a>&nbsp;in China in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Siegers, who joined Crown Resorts in 2017, admitted that a review of the incident should have been undertaken immediately to be effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cBy the time<strong>&nbsp;I joined Crown many of the people and individuals were no longer in place&nbsp;<\/strong>and therefore it was too late.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Siegers also added that&nbsp;<strong>Crown Resorts has made efforts in the past months&nbsp;<\/strong>to reach suitability in the state of New South Wales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Crown Resorts linked to money-laundering activity<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/crown-money-laundering-activity-detected-up-to-february-2021\">Deloitte partner<\/a>&nbsp;Lisa Dobbin has said there were <strong>suspicious transactions potentially linked to money laundering&nbsp;<\/strong>at Crown up&nbsp;<strong>until at least February of this year<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A preliminary report suggested&nbsp;<strong>a large sum of money had been divided across 14 accounts&nbsp;<\/strong>to avoid the AU$10,000 disclosure threshold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deloitte is also focusing on<strong>&nbsp;so-called patron accounts<\/strong>, used by Crown Resorts to allow customers to deposit money for use at casinos. It says these accounts could potentially be&nbsp;<strong>used for money laundering<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dobbin said&nbsp;<strong>the audit is in its preliminary stages<\/strong>. A&nbsp;<strong>final report is expected by August<\/strong>.
